Get Out And Ride
California Cycling Laws
Some of the laws that are important for a cyclist to remember. Riding a bicycle is no different than driving a car. Obey all the same laws.
You should ride as far to the right as practicable, not as possible. use your judgment on what you feel is safe. It is important to realize you do not have to ride in an area that is unsafe, just because it is far right.
(1) When overtaking and passing another bicycle or vehicle proceeding in the same direction.
(2) When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
(3) When reasonably necessary to avoid conditions (including, but not limited to, fixed or moving objects, vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, surface hazards, or substandard width lanes) that make it unsafe to continue along the right-hand curb or edge, subject to the provisions of Section 21656. For purposes of this section, a "substandard width lane" is a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle and a vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane.
Under no circumstances allow yourself to be towed. It's unsafe and can be life threatening in an emergency stop.
If you are under the age of 18, you MUST wear a helmet, properly attached and positioned. It's a good idea and example to others to wear a helmet no matter what your age.
